British stamps

This month in Philately...

In November 1957 the British Post Office began experimenting with automatic stamp identification by printing black graphite lines on the back of definitive stamps, beneath the gum. The sorting machinery was first installed at Southampton and the final graphite- lined stamps were issued just two years later during November 1959 in combination with the new phosphor- band technology that ultimately proved more successful and a boon to specialized collectors of modern issues.
