Trentino - Alto Adige Post Card

Trentino - Alto Adige Post Card

Up to the beginning of WW1 these two Provinces were part of the Austro Hungarian Empire and during the war major battles were fought high in the Alps and Dolomites between Austro-Hungarian and Italian Alpine Troops for whom control of the region was a key strategic objective in order to secure the "Gateway to Italy". The collapse of the Austro-Hungarian war effort enabled Italian troops to occupy the region in 1918 and its annexation was confirmed in the post-war treaties, which awarded the region to Italy under the terms of the Treaty of St Germain. This Picture Post Card used during the Military Occupation period bears an overprinted Austrian10h lake and the rare 90h lilac rose of which only 200 were printed.
