Scandinavian Stamps

From Greenland in the North West to Finland in the east and far down to the Danish / German border the hardy seafaring nations which make up the Scandinavian countries offer a different style of stamp collecting and philately. Gone are the garish colours from tropical climes instead we see more muted palattes and themes which speak of more coastal existence. Vikings and fishermen, artists and poets, hardy horses to ravens and polar bears. Every country has its stamp story, the first from Denmark in 1851, Greenland waiting until 1905 and then just for parcelpost as letters were delivered for free, Norways first stamp with its large margins hunted by collectors for its many different postmarks, Finland with its modern ‘shaped’ self- adhesives.
