The Stamps and Postal History of Europe

The powerhouse of modernity throughout the 19th Century saw sophisticated stamp issues and postal developments. From Portugal to Russia and down to Istanbul, from the world’s oldest democracy to its newest countries, the stamps and postal history of the various European countries and the states which formed them are a rich panorama of monarchs, wars and the movements of people. The history of every country can be charted through its stamps and postal markings, the two great European wars touching the stamp designs of almost every place, the seized and overprinted stamps telling stories of their own, the stamps of the Spanish Civil War, the British stamps overprinted by the Irish in 1922, the grand Soviet ideals set out in miniature.
