France 1937 National Museums Stamps

France 1937 National Museums Stamps

This iconic set of two stamps was issued in August 1937, and was sold in museums with an additional premium of 70c above the face values.

The design of both stamps features 'Victory of Samothrace', a 2nd century BC Hellenistic marble sculpture. The statue was discovered in 1863 by Charles Champoiseau. It was found on the Aegean Island of Samothrace.

The sculpture is displayed in a prominent position at the top of the monumental Daru staircase at the Louvre in Paris. It has had much influence in later designs, including the famous Rolls Royce 'Spirit of Ecstasy' radiator figurine.

There also exists a very rare error of colour with the 30c value, printed in the scarlet colour of the 55c.
