Swedish 3sk yellow stamp

Error of Colour on Cover

Since the discovery of the great Swedish 3sk yellow, errors of colour have caught the attention of philatelists.

Before modern stamp production, these strange stamps were usually created by the insertion of a single incorrect cliché to a plate, and often this was during the repairing process. As early printing plates were often faulty, it is a testament to the printers involved, that few of these mistakes ever occurred!

Depicted is an example of a Rumanian 1893-99 25b blue stamp, which should have been printed in bright mauve. It is tied to a particularly pretty envelope mailed from the US Consulate at Bucharest, to Vermont.
