Lot 5027 (#5338)
Est. £400 - £450
GENERAL SECTION - BRITISH COMMONWEALTH SOCIAL HISTORY 1900-09 AN EMIGRANT'S CORRESPONDENCE BACK HOME. A small box full of envelopes, mostly with their original letters, arranged in date order and written by a Harry Kirkby to his parents in Pilsley, a small village west of Chesterfield. Written in a fine & clear hand, we see five envelopes (one without letter) beginning from Western Australia on 1st January 1901 where it appears he has journeyed to work as a railway fitter, then in 1903 Harry travels to South Africa where the bulk of the letters (approx 175) are sent from. He mentions his passage from Western Australia to South Africa, initially in the Transvaal, then mostly in Bloemfontein in the Orange River Colony - he talks about mining, labour issues, the new construction he sees around him, shops and most often something about the weather! Correspondence also includes a few letters from London in 1900 regarding the purchase of medicine and its packaging, plus some ephemera, mostly receipts, related to the family. Envelopes in mixed condition, but an interesting Social History collection nevertheless. (180+ envelopes with letters + at least 14 without letter + ephemera).
