Georgia Stamp Details

Georgia, a country located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, has a rich history of postal service dating back to the early 19th century. The first Georgian postage stamp was issued in 1991 after the country gained its independence from the Soviet Union. Since then, Georgian stamps have become a popular subject among collectors, showcasing the country's culture, history, and achievements.

Before the introduction of stamps, postal services in Georgia relied on handwritten or stamped markings on letters and envelopes. In 1818, the first official postal service was established by the Russian Empire, which controlled Georgia at the time. The service was later extended to other parts of the country, and in 1858, the first post offices were opened in Tbilisi and other major cities.

The first Georgian postage stamp, issued in 1991, featured a portrait of King David IV, also known as David the Builder, who ruled Georgia in the 12th century. The stamp was designed by an artist named Zurab Tsereteli and printed by the Goznak printing house in Russia.

Since then, Georgian stamps have featured a wide range of designs, including historical figures, landmarks, and cultural symbols. In 1993, a stamp was issued to commemorate the 850th anniversary of the birth of Shota Rustaveli, a medieval Georgian poet and author of the epic poem "The Knight in the Panther's Skin." Other notable stamps include those dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Georgian National Museum and the 150th anniversary of the birth of the famous Georgian painter Niko Pirosmani.

In addition to celebrating Georgian history and culture, stamps have also been used to raise awareness of important social issues. In 2017, a series of stamps was issued to support the fight against cancer, while in 2018, a stamp was released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Georgian Red Cross Society.

Today, Georgian stamps continue to be popular among collectors around the world, with new designs being released regularly. Whether showcasing the country's rich history or supporting important causes, Georgian stamps provide a unique window into the culture and achievements of this fascinating country.

Philatelic postscript: An independent country from 1918 to 1921, part of the USSR until 1991 and again independent since then.
