Panama Overprint on the Wrong Air Stamp!

30/08/2012     Panama

CHIRIQUI is a province on the west coast of Panama, established in 1849 when Panama was still a part of Colombia. Now it is the most developed province in Panama with a local government system partially modelled on that of the US.

In 1949, to commemorate the Centenary of the Incorporation of Chiriqui Province, six stamps mostly from the 1942 pictorial series were overprinted with "CHIRIQUI" and a picture of a mountain. There were several errors to this issue, the most notably the overprint being applied to a 7c carmine Air Post stamp instead of a 2c scarlet value!
