New Zealand 1905-06 1d Universals 'Penny-in-the-Slot' Machines

1/05/2012     New Zealand

Some of the scarcest of the ever popular 1d Universal issues, are those supplied for the 'Penny-in-the-slot' vending machines, which had a first trial run in June 1905, and later in 1906. The stamps are mostly characterised by the two large holes between each stamp, so that they could be wound in rolls onto the reel within the machine, and then separated by 'teeth' (rouletted) or guillotined by the machine when a coin was inserted.
