GENERAL SECTION - 1905-06 WEST AFRICA POSTCARD CORRESPONDENCE WONDERFUL COLLECTION of picture postcards sent by a Charles Taylor to his wife Adie in Bristol, England, between December 1905 & September 1906, bearing the stamps of Sierra Leone & (mostly) Southern Nigeria with most cards being mailed from Warri (in Southern Nigeria, on the Forcados River). The messages from Charles often relate to the pictures on the postcards, we can assume his wife was an avid collector! The first batch of 11 cards posted at Freetown on December 8th 1905 are images of Las Palmas where Charles's ship the S.S.Kasina stopped and on which he wrote his messages en route to Sierra Leone. There are wonderful scenes of Villages, Chiefs, Weddings, railways, street scenes, markets, schools, important colonial officers, much social content incl. the Grand Stand at Lagos Races with a wonderful ethnic mix, all elegantly dressed ("Lagos seems to be in quite an advanced state") or a busy "Gathering of Kroo people / Sierra Leone" ("Should not care to be in this crowd, especially if no one knew I had gone there"). This collection nicely displayed and annotated in a single binder. A unique lot in generally fine condition (79 items).
