Penrhyn Island

FIRST STAMPS Cook Islands.

FIRST STAMPS ISSUED New Zealand overprinted May 1902.

FIRST STAMPS RE-ISSUED Cook Islands overprinted 24 October 1973.

CURRENCY

1902, as New Zealand.

Most northerly of the Cook Islands group. It was proclaimed a New Zealand dependency and administered as part of the' Cook Islands from 1901.

Postal History
There was no issue of stamps for the island when it became a dependency so the stamps of Cook Islands were used until the first special issue in 1902. The island continued to use overprinted stamps until 1932 when the Cook Islands issues were reintroduced.

The northern Cook Islands began to issue their own stamps again in 1973 and since then Penrhyn has used issues inscribed 'Penrhyn Northern Cook Islands'. It still remains a New Zealand dependency.
