Mozambique

CURRENCY

Portuguese.



The Portuguese established trading posts in the 15th century, a long and varied history became a colony. Independence was agreed between Portugal and FRELIMO (Frente de Libertacap de Mocambique) on 7 September 1974 and a People's Republic was proclaimed on 25 June 1975. In 1995, Mozambique opted to become a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations.


Mozambique stamps were in use throughout Portuguese East Africa, except later in areas which had their own issues.

CURRENCY

Zambezia


FIRST STAMPS ISSUED 28 July 1893.



Quelimane and Tete

Two provinces of Zambezia which had their own separate issues in 1913- 20.


Inhambane


FIRST STAMPS ISSUED 1 July 1895.



From 1920 all the above territories reverted to the use of stamps of Mozambique.

Nyassa Company


FIRST STAMPS ISSUED 1898.


CURRENCY

1898, as Portugal.



Chartered to develop an area north of the River Lurio. Stamps withdrawn 1929. Reverted to stamps of Mozambique.


Mozambique Company


FIRST STAMPS ISSUED 1892.


CURRENCY

1892, as Portugal.



Chartered to administer Manica and Sofala. Stamps withdrawn 1942. Reverted to stamps of Mozambique.


Portuguese Colonies General Issues
General issues for use in Portuguese African colonies (after 1951 called overseas provinces) were made at intervals between 1 April 1898 and 1945. Their use (in Angola, Cabo Verde, Mozambique, Porguese Guinea, and Sao Tome e Principe) ceased on 31 August 1958.

FIRST STAMPS USED German East Africa.

FIRST STAMPS ISSUED 1916.



A province of German East Africa which was occupied by Portugal during World War I. It was incorporated into Mozambique.
