Inverted Watermarks

Those of you who receive our printed auction catalogues will notice a Hong Kong stamp placed upside down on the front cover. It’s also on the home page of our website, so you can’t miss it!

Hong Kong is a very well studied philatelic area and the discovery of a previously unknown “watermark inverted” stamp is a surprise!

We got to wondering just how many similar varieties we currently had on offer – believe it or not 21 lots are individual stamps with watermarks inverted so we’ve listed them all below for you.

I can remember the first watermark variety I found, it was a GB 1858 Penny Red – I was so excited. Now our team of experts ‘unearths’ one every few days but the hunt still hasn’t lost any of its thrill and this Hong Kong 1912-14 4c scarlet stamp is the best new discovery we’ve made in years!

Forgive the salesmanship, but one well- known auctioneer has asked us why the estimate is so low – we will let our clients decide if he’s right – bids close on Tuesday 13th August!
