South Georgia 1963 Definitive Set

South Georgia is approximately 100 miles long by about 15 miles wide, and is the largest island of the group known as 'South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands'. It is a British Overseas Territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean.

The first definitive set of postage stamps specifically printed for the Falkland Islands dependency of South Georgia was issued in 1963. They feature 15 different designs by the well known artist Michael Goaman, and show a lovely range of wildlife, shipping and other subjects, which are relative to the island group.

These popular stamps were printed in recess by De La Rue. The South Atlantic Ocean wildlife subjects include, among others, the Fin Whale, Elephant Seal and the Wandering Albatross. The £1 ultramarine top value shows a splendid representation of the world's largest creature, the Blue Whale; these magnificent creatures (Balaenoptera musculus) can grow to a length of 30 metres, can weigh as much as 180 metric tonnes, and are ultimately the largest living creatures on earth.
