1915-16 Ruhleben P.O.W. Camp Post

During WWI, the German authorities ran a P.O.W. camp for civilian prisoners at Ruhleben on the outskirts of Berlin. The parameters of the Geneva Convention were upheld and the internees were allowed to organise their own internal affairs. This eventually included a postal service that ran from July 1915 until April 1916, upon which time the German Postal authorities declared it illegal.

Known as the Ruhleben Express Delivery, during its operating period, it produced a total of 16 different stamps. These included a set of surcharged issues, two Postage Due values and an NVI Official, together with a number of Postal Stationery items. All of these have now become sought after by collectors.
