The earlier stamps of Hawaii were cancelled with pen at many of the smallest offices, such cancellations are often in the shape of crosses or scratches, examples where the name of the office is written across the stamp are rarities - the mighty “Champion”, “Baccarat”, Charles J. Pietsch III & Honolulu Advertiser collections including just 3 examples between them all!

Laupahoehoe is a small village in the district of North Hilo on the north east coast of the Island of Hawaii, the largest and the southeastern-most island of the Hawaiian Islands. Its population was 581 inhabitants in 2010. The name Laupahoehoe (meaning ‘Leaf of lava’) comes from the shape of the local lava formation. A post office is recorded for years 1859-1871, 1880-1884 and 1888-1900. A post office with a name of Laupahoehoe Beach, recorded for years 1884-1888, is possibly the office of Laupahoehoe under a different name.

We offer an example of 1859-63 2c black Numeral issue with a full manuscript cancel of “LAUPAHOEHOE HILO”. This is possibly the best example of a named manuscript cancellation on an early Hawaiian stamp, and in any case one of the few in existence. An important new discovery.
