Papua Stamps

The Western half of the island of New Guinea, originally of little interest to the Western Powers but regarded as economically attractive by the Government of Queensland, whose stamps were used on the island with “NG” or “BNG” cancels. The northern part of the territory was declared a German Colony in 1897 and a postal system using German Colonial issues was in place until the end of World War I when it became an Australian mandated territory. The other part of the territory remained the British Colony of British New Guinea, (Papua from 1906) which issued the stunning “Lakatoi” (native sailing vessel) design between 1901 and 1932.
