Indian Stamps

Indian Stamps

The first Indian stamps were the famous “Scinde Dawk” embossed issue of 1852, for use in the Sind District. The first regular issue wasthe lithographed 1854 ½a, 1a and 4a stamps that have been extremely popular and well studied by philatelists for many decades; the rarest of all Indian Stamps - the celebrated inverted head - is the crown jewel of this issue! Probably the most interesting and popular area of Indian philately are the Indian Feudatory States, a challenging but rewarding area for study!

The beautifully produced East India designs and later Victorian issues were produced by De La Rue in London. The King’s issues are equally stunning and the 25r values are always highly sort after by collectors!

Modern Indian Stamps are colourful and attractive, and rare missing colours and other varieties can be found, and one of the most valuable stamps from the period is the 10r Gandhi that has multiplied in value over the last few years to become one of the key issues!

Indian Stamps used abroad

For postmark hunters, Indian Stamps used abroad in the Arabian Gulf, Zanzibar and other areas are a fascinating area to collect. Many of the Victorian to KGVI stamps were overprinted for use in the Convention States, as well as for use abroad such as Kuwait and Bahrain.
