By the Lateran
Treaty of 11 February 1929 the temporal power which the Pope had lost in 1870
was restored by the creation of the state of Vatican City in the heart of Rome.
The Vatican has continued to issue
stamps throughout the ensuing years and has remained the temporal base of the
