Turks Islands

FIRST STAMPS ISSUED 4 April 1867.

Uninhabited until 1678, when claimed as British. Permanent settlement was made from Bermuda in 1781. From 1799 to 1848 islands were attached to Bahamas. In 1848-73 they became a separate colony under the supervision of the Governor of Jamaica. From 1873 they were a dependency of Jamaica, but reverted to colonial rule on Jamaica's independence in 1962. Caicos Islands, which remained under Bahamas to 1900, then joined Turks.

Turks are said to have been issued with a Ship Letter stamp in 1840 and a datestamp in 1842, though the first PG was opened on 11 December 1854 and marks are known only from 1856.
