Uninhabited until
1678, when claimed as British. Permanent settlement was made from Bermuda in
1781. From 1799 to 1848 islands were attached to Bahamas. In 1848-73 they
became a separate colony under the supervision of the Governor of Jamaica. From
1873 they were a dependency of Jamaica, but reverted to colonial rule on
Jamaica's independence in 1962. Caicos Islands, which remained under Bahamas to
1900, then joined Turks. |
|
Turks are said to have been issued
with a Ship Letter stamp in 1840 and a datestamp in 1842, though the first PG
was opened on 11 December 1854 and marks are known only from 1856.
