STAMPS Papal States 1850 to 1870, Italy 1870-7. FIRST STAMPS
ISSUED 1 August 1877. CURRENCY 1877, 100
centesimi = 1 lira. According to tradition the oldest
republic still in existence, San Marino is believed to have been founded in the
4th century by Marinus, an escaped stone-cutter who was avoiding religious
persecution. |
|
The republic was an enclave in the
Papal States and used the stamps of that region from 1850.
San Marino has continued to issue stamps since
1877 and was not occupied during World War II.
