CURRENCY 1870, 8 reales = 1 peso. 1878, 100 centavos = 1
peso. 1944, 100 centimos = 1 guarani.
Declared
independence from Spain and Buenos Aires in 1811. At war with Argentina, Brazil
and Uruguay in 1864-70 when between two-thirds and nine-tenths of the
population and much territory were lost. Occupied by Brazilian army 1870-6.
Fought Bolivia in the Gran Chaco War 1932-5, and kept the territory won by
arms. The current president has been re-elected five times since 1954.
Internal postal service begun in
1769 functioned until 1811. The mail route ran from Buenos Aires via Santa Fe
and Corrientes to Candelaria and Asuncion. |
