CURRENCY Sterling. General term for the occupied
German territories during World War I. It included the area which subsequently
became the territory of New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, the Admiralty
Group, the westernmost Solomon Islands of Bougainville and Buka and Nauru. The
intention to use these issues in the smaller island groups - the Carolines,
Marshall and Mariana Islands - was not implemented as they were occupied by
Japanese and not Australian forces. |
