kip. When the constituent parts of
French Indo-China broke up in 1949, Laos became an independent kingdom and
associate state within the French Union. On 22 October 1953 it became fully
independent within the Union and on 7 December 1956 left the Union. From 1953
the Pathet Lao (Laos People's Front) backed by North Vietnam fought the
established regime. In 1975 the king was deposed and a People's Democratic
Republic ruled. |
