When the constituent parts of French Indo-China broke up in 1949, Laos became an independent kingdom and associate state within the French Union. On 22 October 1953 it became fully independent within the Union and on 7 December 1956 left the Union. From 1953 the Pathet Lao (Laos People's Front) backed by North Vietnam fought the established regime. In 1975 the king was deposed and a People's Democratic Republic ruled.
