FIRST STAMPS 26 May 1966. CURRENCY 100 cents = 1 dollar. Formerly British Guiana, this country became independent within the British Commonwealth on 26 May 1966. A member of the Caribbean Free Trade Area (CARIFTA) and since 23 February 1970 a 'co-operative republic'. In 1975 there were 170 POs and PAs.
