FIRST
STAMPS Britain 1858-60 (oblit. A15 St Georges). FIRST STAMPS
ISSUED 1861.
CURRENCY 1861, sterling. 1949, 100 cents = 1 West Indian

Discovered by Columbus in 1498, it was settled by the French in 1650. Captured
by Britain in April 1762 and held by them until July 1779. Grenada was finally
awarded to Britain by the Treaty of Versailles in 1783.
Like the other Windward Islands,
Grenada was under control of the British GPO in London, especially for overseas
mail, and British stamps were introduced in 1858.
Grenada was granted responsible
government in 1951, ministerial government and then associated statehood in
1967. It became independent within the Commonwealth on 7 December 1974. A
left-wing government became established and there was an internal revolt in
November 1983, which was followed by invasion by US troops. The occupying force
left early in 1984 and no special stamps were issued. However, mail from
American forces can be recognized by special Army P0 numbers. |
