CURRENCY 1867, 8 reales = 100 centavos = 1 peso. 1912, 100
centavos = 1 colon.
Invaded by the
Spaniards in 1524 and the capital was established at San Salvador. Six POs were
in operation before the collapse of the Spanish Empire. Became independent of
Spain on 22 September 1822. The country fought to prevent annexation by Mexico
and joined the United Provinces of Central America in 1823. It became
independent and assumed the name of El Salvador on 30 January 1841.

Seebeck held the contract for the
supply of Salvador's stamps from 1890 to 1898. In recent years Salvador has
been involved in a major civil war between the Government and left-wing forces.
This has caused serious disruption of the postal service, though government
issues are, still circulated regularly through the UPU.
