FIRST STAMPS 1 January 1865.
CURRENCY
1865, 8 reales = 1 peso.
1881, 100 centavos = 1 sucre.

Under Spanish rule part of the Viceroyalty of New Granada, it was freed in 1822 and became part of Greater Colombia. It became an independent republic on 13 May 1830. Few heads of state or constitutions have lasted any time; a military junta assumed power in 1976.

Handstamps were in use from 1779, including the 'beaded oval' type (1819-30). A British P0 at Guayaquil handled external mail from 1849 to 1880, with handstamps from 1849.

Stamps of France used at Guayaquil 25 April 1872-4 March 1874 in connection with Pacific Ligne F.

Colombian company which established internal air routes in Ecuador with external services to Colombia and Peru (see also Colombia).

FIRST STAMPS ISSUED 15 July 1957.
These are found used also on the mainland.
